About Dr. Ruben Branson

Dr Branson works full time in Sport and Exercise Medicine and has a particular interest in biological interventions for joint and tendon problems.

Dr Branson qualified in medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1995. Following this he worked in General Practice in London and achieved Honours in the MRCGP General Practice exam. He then completed a Master’s degree in General Practice at Kings College London achieving Distinction and published his research in the prestigious British Medical Journal.

Dr Branson realised early in his career that exercise is essential to health and wellbeing and moved to Melbourne in 2003 to pursue a full time career in Sport and Exercise Medicine. He was an Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine and carried out research into hamstring injuries in Australian Rules Football. He then joined the Australasian College of Sports Physicians specialist training program, successfully completing the fellowship exam in 2012 and is currently a senior registrar.

He has worked with a variety of professional sporting teams and organisations at local, national and international level and is currently Chief Medical Officer for Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club.

Dr Branson has contributed to team success with clubs he has worked with including successful grand final campaigns with Collingwood in 2010, Melbourne Storm in 2009 and 2012 and a successful Australian Paralympics Team campaign in Beijing 2008.

Dr Branson has also worked with the A League, national junior and international visiting soccer teams. He has also worked in many multisport events including the Commonwealth Games, University Games and Triathlon events and also in endurance mountain bike racing, being the event doctor for the Kona 24 hour mountain bike race from 2003 to 2007.

In 2011 Dr Branson completed a fellowship year at Sydney Sports Medicine Centre and New South Wales Institute of Sport where he further developed his interest in biological interventions for joint and tendon problems.

Having worked in a variety of sports at the elite level Dr Branson aims to bring this level of care and understanding to elite, non-elite and sedentary individuals alike.  His goal is to allow people to continue to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout life regardless of age.

His current research interests include interventional therapies for tendon problems.

When not working Dr Branson enjoys spending time cycling and trying to keep up with his cycling friends on Beach Road. He has previously competed in mountain bike endurance events, criterium races, and has completed ‘Around the Bay in a Day’ and the ‘Alpine Classic’ on a few occasions. He has a wife and two young daughters and now balances his passion for sport with his family life and love of good food.
