From 1 July 2025, Sportsmed Biologic has updated specialist billing to align with new Medicare item numbers.

While overall fees are increasing, the out-of-pocket cost for patients will be lower thanks to higher Medicare rebates.

This makes it more affordable to access high-level care with a GP referral.

What's Changing?

• Sports and Exercise Medicine Physicians (SEMPs) can now access Group A4 Medicare item numbers (same as cardiologists and neurologists). 
• Higher Medicare rebates for patients.
• Longer and more comprehensive consultations.
• Lower out-of-pocket costs for initial consults.

• SEMPs formally recognised as consultant physicians.
• Acknowledges the complexity of sports medicine consults.
• Supports higher rebates to reduce barriers.
