At Sportsmed Biologic the treating specialist supervising your care also performs, if needed, the appropriate interventional procedure.

Led by the Director of Medical Services Dr. Philip Bloom, we bring together an experienced team of Sports Physicians and allied health practitioners.

Our sports physicians are experienced in working with elite athletes as well as non-elite individuals of all ages. They are trained in the use of ultrasound and ultrasound guided interventions, having attended both local and international training programs.

Referrals for a specialist opinion are required from your General Practitioner.

The injury rehabilitation program is led by the Sports Physician and is coordinated by a Personal Rehabilitation Coordinator. This ensures the your ongoing care is completely individualised and targeted to your needs.

The rehabilitation is tailored to your individual injury risk, activity profile, aims and ultimate goals.

Initial and ongoing assessments include recording validated patient outcome measures. This allows the effect of any intervention to be quantified which helps guide your individual treatment process. It also allows you and your treating physician to visualise your progress clearly.

OUR THERAPIES

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy involves the delivery of high intensity ultrasound waves through a special handpiece. The therapy was initially used in assisting the removal of kidney stones via external application on the skin.

Cortisone Injections

Sportsmed Biologic provide Corticosteroid injections to help reduce inflammation in or around tendons and joints.

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy involves injecting an otherwise non-pharmacological and non-active irritant solution into the body for the purpose of strengthening weakened connective tissue and alleviating musculoskeletal pain.

Viscosupplementation

Viscosupplementation refers to the intra-articular introduction of liquids based on hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in high concentrations in the synovial fluid of joints.

PRP Therapy

In Platelet Rich Plasma PRP therapy, blood is drawn from the patient and is used to treat musculoskeletal injuries. The principle is similar to Autologous Blood Therapy but the blood is processed to concentrate the factors which promote healing.

Orthokine Therapy

Orthokine Therapy is a form of injection therapy, which harnesses and enhances the bodies natural defence mechanisms against inflammation to reduce pain.

High Volume Injection

A high volume injection is a procedure performed to treat a tendon injury that occurs as a result of severe strain being placed on the tendon. During the healing process following a tendon injury, tiny blood vessels grow into the tendon bringing with them new nerves as well. These nerves are responsible for the sensation of pain related to the tendon injury or tendinopathy.

nSTRIDE®

nSTRIDE® APS is an autologous protein solution (APS) containing anti-inflammatory cytokines and anabolic growth factors. It is one of the latest biologic regenerative treatments used in treating knee osteoarthritis.

Pentosan Polysulphate Sodium (PPS)

Pentosan Polysulphate Sodium (PPS) is a semi-synthetic drug manufactured in Europe to produce a product that mimics glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). These complex carbohydrates have a regulatory role in the body through interacting with proteins involved with inflammation. PPS also has a mild antithrombotic (anti-clotting) activity.

Platelet Lysate Epidural

A Platelet Lysate Epidural is an injection of a concentrated solution of platelets into the epidural space to treat pain and other conditions in the spine and nerves. Platelet lysate is a type of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).
