Durolane/Synvisc injection for osteoarthritis

Viscosupplementation refers to the intra-articular introduction of liquids based on hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally present in high concentrations in the synovial fluid of joints.

What are Durolane injections?

Durolane is a preparation of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance present in the joint fluid that assists in lubrication. It allows smooth movement of the cartilage-covered articulating surfaces of the joint. In osteoarthritis, joint fluid becomes thinner and does not provide enough protection. Durolane is a gel preparation that is injected into the joint to replenish joint fluid and stimulate the production of new hyaluronic acid. This provides symptomatic relief and can delay the need for surgery.

Indications and Contraindications of Durolane injections

Durolane injections are indicated in the management of shoulder, knee, hip or ankle osteoarthritis that have not responded to non-surgical treatment options such as pain medications, physical therapy and corticosteroid injections. Durolane is not used if you have an active infection in the joint or the skin overlying the joint, or a known adverse reaction to hyaluronic acid products.

How are Durolane Injections Administered?

The procedure takes no more than 30 minutes and you can usually return home the same day. You will be fully awake during the procedure. The skin over the area is anesthetised. Your doctor may inject Durolane directly into the joint or with the help of imaging studies to accurately guide the needle to the area needing treatment. The medication is then delivered. Following the injection, the joint is rested and ice may be applied. You will have to wait for some time in the recovery area to ensure there are no adverse effects.

What will I Experience Following Durolane Injection?

You may experience mild pain, swelling, warmth and redness at the injection site for up to 48 hours following the injection. Headache and joint stiffness may also occur in some cases. Ice packs and an analgesic may be recommended to ease the discomfort. Any strenuous activity such as jogging, tennis, heavy lifting or prolonged standing, should be completely avoided for 48 hours to a week after the injection. Weekly injections may be administered for 3-5 weeks. Compared to other hyaluronic acid preparations, Durolane provides long-term relief.

What are the Risks Associated with Durolane Injections?

Complications with Durolane injections are rare and may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Joint stiffness
  • Allergic reaction
